For many of us Valentine’s Day is a fun day where we do or give something special for our husband/wife, life partner, special friend, loved one – whatever you want to call them, they are our person or persons. And hopefully, they do the same for us. There’s usually a beautiful card that puts into words most of the feelings that are experienced, yet rarely spoken. The day comes wrapped in hearts and bows, might include a dinner out (remember to make reservations) and then it’s done.
But for some of us, it’s not a red satin ribbon, beautiful day. In fact for some, it’s a day that only enhances the loneliness we feel every-day. If you don’t have that special someone, it can feel like a bull horn yelling A.L.O.N.E. and S.I.N.G.L.E! If this is you in some form or fashion we understand and we feel your pain. However, we have a couple of ideas (not original) that might lessen or even eliminate the discomfort of the day itself.
1. Be the love you wish you had. Years ago one of my dear friends used Valentine’s Day as a way for her to love on her single friends – male and female. Being a single lady herself, she’d buy roses – one for each single friend – and deliver one to each of her friends with a note highlighting how special that person was to her. The act of giving lightened her hear and was a special treat to each of her friends.
2. Celebrate Galentine’s Day on February 13th (or any day you choose). Never heard of this? It’s a nonofficial holiday made famous by the tv show, Parks and Recreation’s character Leslie Knope, played by Amy Poehler. It’s a celebration of female friendship. Find out more about the creation of Galentine’s Day. And if you want to throw a Galentine’s Day party, HGTV (who doesn’t LOVE HGTV) has plenty of ideas for how to make it super fun and special.
3. If you love the idea of Galentine’s Day but don’t want to leave out those special “guy” friends, consider a Palentine’s Celebration. Palentine’s Day is a gender-inclusive holiday to celebrate platonic love between friends! It’s all about getting together with your friends, doing something fun and sharing the love of ALL of the people you care about in your life, without thinking of romantic partners.
